Q&A with Ross Parry, Commercial Data & MI Manager

- What’s your role at TotalEnergies Gas & Power?
I joined TotalEnergies Gas & Power in January 2020 as Commercial Data & MI (management information) Manager, leading a small team of reporting and insight analysts within our Commercial & Transformation department. One of the primary functions of the team is to support the sales teams, who focus not only on small and medium-sized business customers but also our industrial, commercial and public customers, through the provision of regular performance reporting and insight.
We also deliver analysis on things such as our meter portfolio, customer segmentation and product split which all feed into and help define our commercial strategy. - What do you most enjoy about your job? And what do you find most challenging?
I get a lot of satisfaction from problem solving and coming up with new ideas. I'm fortunate to have a wide remit in my role so have a lot of things I can get my teeth stuck into, whether it be looking at how we share and consume data and reporting across the business, looking into segmenting our customer base to work out where we provide the best value, or finding ways to measure performance against our business objectives. I also enjoy learning more about the UK energy market and how our broader business operates within it.
I think the most challenging aspect of my job, but also partly what makes it enjoyable, is the time pressure. We are operating in a very fast changing energy market, particularly in recent months, so we need to identify, develop, test and implement solutions very quickly, often against a backdrop of a fragmented data landscape. It makes things challenging but also very rewarding and presents opportunities to build strong relationships with people across the business. - What’s the best piece of business or work advice you’ve received?
The piece of advice that has stuck in my mind the most is that trust is key to any relationship. I always try to build trust in my relationships by acting with integrity, creating win-win scenarios and delivering results. This has helped me build a strong network of relationships across the business which ultimately means I can get better results, quicker. - What are you best known for?
I think I'm best known for synthesising lots of complicated data from disparate sources into usable reporting and insight for the business which people can understand. On a more personal level, I'm known for enjoying my rugby and for being a keen BBQer, often having something like a beef brisket or pork shoulder smoking on the BBQ overnight.
