Role: Technical Data Support

Employee spotlight photo Sean W.jpg

I have been working on the 4th floor for about 2 years now assisting the Technical Data department and providing print room and billing support for the entire Redhill site.

Formerly I worked in the office services department as a temp with Marion D and Parkey which was handy to get to know everyone.

Other departments utilize me periodically due to my second job as a Designer and Cartoonist.

Home is by the Beach in Hastings, so typically my day starts at 4.30AM. This might sound extreme but since having my first daughter, Dixie, in February I don’t really sleep anyway, so what’s the difference?

It’s a hop skip and a jump to Hastings train station. All going well and I make it unscathed through the gauntlet of seagulls and pirates, I plant myself in the same seat every morning on the first train. The good old trusty 05.08 to London Bridge.

Great train.

The distance is not an issue as I like my job and used to live local, so I check in with family and friends for lunch.

Once I arrive in Redhill I race up the Bridge Gate main entrance for a quick conversation with the only man who is actually awake and up before I am, Big Phil on security. (Seriously, I check my Facebook on the train and he’s already been up for hours bench pressing cars.)

Our favourite topics of conversation include but are not limited to:

  • News headlines
  • How things are done differently in Manchester
  • How tired we both are
  • Excuses for forgetting my pass
  • Knitting patterns

I use a standing desk which is the subject of a lot of questions and confused looks. Short version is that I spend too long sitting on the train so I stand at work. The drawback is look like I’m piloting a ship all day.

What do I actually do?

I’m in early as I create reports and present data for various departments that is required early. Then I kick off the bills for printing, ingest Kenco and keep an eye on returned metering photographs that might have come in.

That reminds me, I’m also the point of contact between the Major Business department and Morrison Data Services so Metering emails take up a hefty chunk of my day too.

Although I rarely have external customers, I think of my co-workers as my customers. It’s up to me to provide decent reports, data, and help with any queries and requests that come in from them.

I’m lucky enough to be needed in different locations of the building thorough the day to help keep things varied.Come the end of the day, all the bills are packed and posted, new metering queries have been sent to Morrison to arrange visits and I am finishing up with emails from co-workers.

Then it’s train home, back through the Hastings seagulls and pirates, dinner, baby down, couple of hours designing or cartooning and then to bed.

Alarm set for 4.30 AM.

Same again tomorrow.
