Let's hear from Daniel Schouten on his career progression within the company:
Tell us about you career journey: I have been in the organisation for 11 years now and started out as a Sales Relationship Manager in Major Business Indirect Sales… working with some of our key brokers/TPIs; the likes of Inenco, Accenture and Schneider Electric. I went on to be a National Account Manager in Major Business Direct Sales where I spent most of my career working with some of our largest direct I&C customers; the likes of Tesco, Asda, Greggs, and the Church of England.
I recently joined the Public Sector Sales team as a Framework Manager; managing our UK central government contracts which span across our supply frameworks with CCS (Crown Commercial Services) and Scottish Procurement. I do this in addition to managing a lovely and very talented bunch of National Account Managers and Sales Relationship Managers who help support and manage these key relationships also. Should you be interested in finding out more about life in Sales and/or particularly in Public Sector Sales please do get in touch as would be happy to provide that little more insight.
What has helped you succeed within the business?
I’ve got to say it’s the people… without the network of people here at TEGP (past and present),I wouldn’t have achieved very much if anything at all!. For all the systems and processes we have (which are very much needed by the way!) it’s the people here that have helped me, as well as others and the business in general achieve its goals. Having the right people around helps breeds confidence, trust, and a really strong desire to strive forward to meet our future challenges; not only as an individuals but as teams and as a group. Thanks to all those people and far too many of you to name here!
What motivates you?
I enjoy problem solving! It requires patience sometimes but I enjoy drawing on my knowledge, past experiences and/or finding the right people with the right knowledge to help solve a complex problem (…gets me out of bed in the morning!) I am also really motivated by seeing those around me do well and knowing I may have had just a very little or small influence in their growth and/or development. Plus I don’t mind seeing a nice big public sector framework being renewed or won either… but that would have been the easy thing to say given I work in sales!
What does the promotion mean for you?
For me it’s a great opportunity to better understand and get to know another channel within sales and to work with another great set of people. I’m passionate about seeing people grow/develop and go on to be great successes so I’m relishing the opportunity to try put this into practice. I’m also excited about helping plot the path Public Sector Sales might take going forward especially given the current market conditions. Plenty of challenges and opportunities ahead!
Advice for anyone considering an internal move.?
Just go for it! You may not get that internal job as the first time of asking but you will have lost nothing but throwing your hat into the ring and at the very least you’ll gain some valuable experience and insight. The biggest challenge can sometimes be letting opportunities pass us by so don’t let them… be bold, be brave and push yourself outside of your comfort zone as you may actually like/enjoy what you find on the other side...
Considering an internal career move?
Let's hear from Maelys Merlaud as she shares her career journey at TotalEnergies:
Name: Maelys Merlaud
TEGP Career Journey:
I got my first job ever when I joined Supplier Hub (now Industry Operations), in October 2016. I stayed there for about a year and a half before joining Commercial and more specifically the Data Portfolio team. There, I learnt about Gas and found out how useful SQL can be as an analysis and reporting tool.
In January 2020, I started working in the Reconciliations Team (Settlements), for a 12 month FTC. It was a great way to learn about industry charges and gain managerial experience with a lot of support (Thanks Kate!). At the end of this FTC, I went back to Commercial and joined Power Pricing as Assistant Power Pricing Manger. I got to utilize my Power & Pricing knowledge as well as my new managerial experience. As if all the stars had aligned!
Tell us your 'Why':
I have moved around because I always want to know more about the company and how the industry works. I am also very interested in making processes better and I found it very satisfying to be able to build bridges between teams thanks to prior knowledge.
Advice for anyone considering an internal move:
- Be curious: have job watches or, if you see a job opportunity you are curious about, ask the hiring manager for an informal chat to learn more about the role
- Know yourself and what you want: be able to articulate why you are leaving your current role, why you are interested in this particular one and why your experience is going to help you succeed
- Ask for feedback: whether you are successful or not, ask how you can improved
