Not far from Sicily, Malta is a small island (17 miles long) and has centuries of history, first inhabited in 5200 BC and long-used as a Naval base due to its strategic location. Malta has had its fair share of tragedy – notably the Ottoman Empire’s ‘Great Siege of Malta’ and the part they played in WWII, awarding them the unfortunate accolade of the most heavily bombed country per square metre. The capital of Valletta has extensive shopping and a great nightlife, restaurants and trendy wine/whiskey bars covering the compact city centre. And the views… well you will have to see for yourself, but let’s just say – breath-taking.

  1. St John’s Co-Cathedral
Don’t be fooled by its understated exterior, it has the most ornate Baroque interior. Take an audio guide and learn about the history and the Order of St John. It is home to works from Caravaggio (including his masterpiece – ‘The Beheading of St John the Baptist’), who was ordained as a Knight of St John in 1608 (I don’t think they knew he was on the run for killing a man, nor that he would shortly end up back in prison!).

  2. Visit Mdina
A 30 minute bus ride from Valletta and like taking a trip back in time; Mdina is peaceful (affectionately named the ‘Silent City’) and beautiful, the streets are lined with stunning colonial buildings and the view of the island is incredible from the Fontella Tea Gardens.

  3. Eat at Sotto Pizzeria
One of the best pizzas I’ve ever had – I recommend a simple yet gorgeous Margherita. Watch out for the entrance though, it’s easy to miss, but you know it’s going to be good when the place is packed full of locals!

  4. Lascaris War Rooms
Even if you are not a history aficionado, this is well worth the hour-long guided tour. The tour guides are aficionados and give a brilliant overview of how Malta ended up invading Sicily to push back the Italian contingent.

  5. Indulge at Rampila
Fine dining at its best – for a reasonable price. If it’s warm sit outside on the Terrace!
