On June 30th 2025, the technology supporting Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) electricity meters will be discontinued. The RTS uses a radio signal to communicate with these types of electricity meters, instructing them to switch between peak and off-peak rates based on the time of day. As the radio signal is being shut down, this means RTS meters won't be able to switch between rates properly, leading to incorrect billing and issues with heating/hot water. Therefore, it's very important that these meters are upgraded to smart meters before the shutdown takes place.
We're about to begin an email campaign to raise customer awareness and encourage affected customers to upgrade their traditional RTS meter to a smart meter solution (AMR or SMETS2). We have resources to assist customers with the changeover, including our dedicated webpage and digital leaflet (attached).
If you are contacted by a customer who believes they have an RTS meter:
- Provide the digital leaflet (attached) and a link to the RTS webpage - https://business.totalenergies.uk/radio-teleswitch-service
- Encourage them to request a smart meter upgrade online using our meter upgrade request form - https://business.totalenergies.uk/business-meter-upgrade
- If they've been contacted by their meter operator, encourage them to respond and book a meter exchange appointment.
If you or the customer have any questions regarding the RTS shut down, please email gp.deployment.uk@totalenergies.com for assistance.
